The pattern is based on my hand cut stencil made out of a mulberry paper, which in Japanese is known as Shibugami. This paper is made from mulberry tree, impregnated in persimmon juice before it is smoked. After cutting the pattern in the Shibugami paper, it is strengthened with a silk gauze. Due to the repeated soaking and work with rice paste on the paper and fabric, the papers have a short life span and the fabric with a certain pattern can only exist in a very limited edition.

When I cut in the paper, something happens and I can create patterns and images that tell more than when I sketch with pen and paper. The flowering grass is something I have been trying to catch on paper for a long time, but how do you paint grass? Which color does it have? When I got the opportunity to cut in the mulberry paper I could finally express the picture I had in my mind.
